Linking Particles to a Null with Particular
Posted: September 5th, 2008
Back from the dead! Thanks for stopping by, here’s a new one for you that I think you’ll find very valuable if it’s not already in your workflow. I use this literally everytime I’m moving particles on a path, I find the technique much better than emitting particles from a light.
Linking your particle simulation directly to a null also gives you the ability to link multiple simulations to the same null and gives you the flexibility to really create some killer simulations.
Enjoy!!

Thanks Andy - good to be back! This one is actually a little primer to the one I mentioned at the end of the video, wanted to be sure I had gone over this technique before showing the next thing.
The sound quality on this one should be much better as well, picked up a sweet new mic and it makes a ton of difference.

Hi, thanks for the fantastic post!! I followed along using Maya but unfortunately the imported camera and null objects are scaled incorrectly when bringing then into AE (i believe it has something to do with mayas units of measurements - i still have not solved it). I can replace a null object with a COMP of a layer which has Particular effects, but its of course 2d (the 2d solid just moves along with the null object, looking quite odd).
It’s fantastic that Cinema handles this so smoothly, I can’t say as much of Maya!! =(
